Dear 18 Year Old Duane,
Life has been both uninteresting and interesting all at the same time. You remain a wall-flower in school, hanging with the popular crowd yet not feeling like you belong in that group or any other for that matter. You’re best friend’s Bob and Jim are pretty much in the same boat. You care but you don’t and that’s OK. It will serve you well as you go through life. Becuase of your experiences, you’ll have the right amount of empathy and compassion for those you eventually end up leading.
You know what’s cool? The confidence you found in sports will carry you a long way. You might have stayed in your shell, but once you left Waupun, your leadership skills appeared. From college on you led. You’re leadership transition began as dorm president then on to resident assistant in college.
Hang in there. I know you really despised high school but better days lie ahead. Much better days.
Duane
